A resonance Raman study of graphene samples with different 13 C isotopic concentrations and using different laser excitation energies is presented. The main Raman peaks (D, G, G * , and 2D) of graphene were measured and the dependence of their frequencies on the isotope atomic mass follows a simple harmonic oscillator relation. The G * and 2D double-resonance peak positions were measured as a function of the laser energy, and we observed that the slopes of the laser energy dependence are the same independently of isotope concentration. This result shows that isotopic substitution does not alter the electron and phonon dispersions near the K point of the graphene Brillouin zone. From the linewidth of G and 2D Raman peaks, we have also obtained a dependence of the phonon lifetime on the 13 C isotope concentration.

Combining Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy with quantitative isotopic labeling for differentiation of E. coli cells at community and single cell levels.

There is no doubt that the contribution of microbially mediated bioprocesses toward maintenance of life on earth is vital. However, understanding these microbes in situ is currently a bottleneck, as most methods require culturing these microorganisms to suitable biomass levels so that their phenotype can be measured. The development of new culture-independent strategies such as stable isotope p...

Raman spectroscopy study of nano sheets of graphene and measurement of their resistivity

Graphene is a promising candidate for future high-speed electronics applications. It is a thin layer of pure carbon in which every atom is available for chemical reaction from two sides (due to the 2D structure). This is the only form of carbon (or solid material) with this characteristic feature. Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized through the oxidation of graphite using the Hummer’s method, i...

Probing the nature of defects in graphene by Raman spectroscopy.

Raman spectroscopy is able to probe disorder in graphene through defect-activated peaks. It is of great interest to link these features to the nature of disorder. Here we present a detailed analysis of the Raman spectra of graphene containing different type of defects. We found that the intensity ratio of the D and D' peak is maximum (∼13) for sp(3)-defects, it decreases for vacancy-like defect...

The effect of doping Graphene Quantum Dots with K, B, N, and Cl on its emitted spectrum

In this work, the effect of doping Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) on their emission spectra has been studied. First, graphene has been deposited on SiC substrate by using sublimation method. Second, doped-GQDs have been distributed on the surface of graphene via drop casting. The structure of the samples have been studied and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy ...

Side-by-side comparison of Raman spectra of anchored and suspended carbon nanomaterials.

Raman spectra of ordered carbon nanomaterials are quite sensitive to surface perturbations, including trace residues, structural defects and residual stress. This is demonstrated by a series of experiments with carbon nanotubes and graphene. Their spectra change due to subtle changes in preparation and attachment to the substrate and to each other. Differences are most clearly seen by forming a...
